Literary Memory

With Katherine McCord. Starting 30/01/2019

If you want to write about your life, want to write literary memoir but don’t know how or where to begin, you are not alone. Sometimes it’s because you don’t need to begin at the beginning, or, even, think about audience but simply intuit it. In other words, you begin where you begin, you write what you must and in the order it comes out and, believe it or not, you will be writing memoir. You will see how your pages work together and make a complete memoir that is moving and profound, not only just for you, but an audience. And, perhaps, it will be said way better than it would have been had you followed the traditional arc of a story. This online writing class will be about that. I will teach you to do it, make your way toward art, which is all literary memoir is anyway, and find that release. There will be weekly assignments and I will provide you with written feedback on each assignment.

Module One – We’ll begin with a small event or image. You will trust your intuition, and you will write about it to yourself, showing it to yourself, not writing from preconceived ideas, but writing to remember.

Module Two – With guidance, you will choose something from your writing of Week One and, with guidance, you will describe it without referencing the scene of Week One.

Module Three – This week we will use a writing exercise to help you subconsciously pull up what needs to be written about next in terms of your memoir. At the end of the exercise you will have more to add to your memoir.

Module Four – Now you will learn about kinds of memoir that will help you carry on with your writing as it stands.

Module Five – This week you will, with guidance, determine the voice of the memoir you are writing. Knowing it, or beginning to, will help you know how to proceed with more writing this week.

Module Six – In your last week, with guidance, you will finalize your memoir or determine what’s next so that you can carry on writing it after class is over.

Suitable for all levels.
