What are the Modules?

When you enrol in the intermediate creative writing class at The Writing District, there will be a number of modules over the course of the six weeks. Each week, there will be a new module that explores a different aspect and element of creative writing.

The first week will look at character and story structure, introducing core ideas about character and empathy, as well as how questions of conflict and ‘what if’ can help with character development. After this, the second week moves onto time and pace, and the various techniques you can use to create a timeline, flashbacks and flashforwards in a narrative.

In the third week, the module focuses on juxtaposition and how connections and clashes can help develop narrative ideas. Week four delves deeper into the editing process and flash fiction, looking at how short narrative can be powerful and effective. In week five, the module expands on how writers can incorporate emotions and senses into their work, creating original narratives.

To finish the class, the last module is about symbolism and suspense. It encourages you to experiment with your use of language and new ideas, and find your many voices that you might have. The class is taught by esteemed writing tutor, Kerry Hadley-Pryce, who is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton and editor of The Blackcountryman magazine. She has published two novels, several short stories and is currently a PhD candidate too.
